As with many shopfitters and sign companies, Northampton Signs was busy with several units within this large new shopping centre.

Arcadia, with Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins, Burtons and Miss Selfridge, took up a good share retail space.

Northampton Signs having successfully delivered on all of the recent high profile sites for Arcadia was asked to handle all the signs for all of these brands, with handover dates spreading over two weeks.

The scheduling and project management and very close liaison with the shopfitters and PM were critical to get everything completed on time. Flexibility being key on a big project like this, as various problems arise on site and so plans have to be changed as the handover deadline approaches.

The mall signs are from built up letters with internal LED illumination fixed directly to the glass with all mechanical fixings hidden within the letters and linked together discretely by a non-visible connection linking the power to each letter.

The Topshop and Topman lettering are large built up letters 500mm deep, with neon inside.

There was also plenty of signage within the stores. And the completed job was a great success, looking great and delivered on time with a smile.

January 2012 | Topman – Bespoke Signage

This sign was designed and manufactured by Northampton Signs, based on a sketch by the Topman Creative Manager. It is specifically for 214 Oxford Street, Arcadia’s flagship store.

The sign is double sided and free standing, built in-house from raw timber and illuminated by Red neon on both sides.

It stands 2500mm high and has an aluminium base unit clad in timber with a built in fan to keep the transformer cool. Clear acrylic panels are rebated into both sides of the sign to stop the general public from touching the neon.

Sign was part of a re-brand of the Vintage clothing area at Topman 214 Oxford Street, London.

August 2012 | Barnardo’s Fashion Superstore, Manchester

Northampton Signs was asked to provide the external and internal signage for the Barnardo’s Fashion Superstore at Crown Point North Shopping Centre, Denton near Manchester. This was a brand new concept for Barnardo’s and therefore a lot of development work was required.

Barnardo’s goal was to create a high profile retail environment to sell their quality fashionware and to rival the more recognised high street brands. Working closely with Barnardo’s and their design agency, we brought the designer’s visual concept to life and completed the project within a relatively short lead time.

The signage scope included: external flex face signs, window graphics, large amounts of wallpaper throughout the store, large canvas pictures, painted acrylic letters pinned to bulkheads to name zones and colourful printed POS and perimeter signage.

The Superstore was officially opened by Barnardo’s Ambassador Nicola Roberts (of Girls Aloud/Sky Living) in August 2012.

November 2012 | Goldsmiths Bullring, Birmingham

Goldsmiths invited us to develop what would be our largest signage and cladding project to date for them. Situated in what is one of the most prominent locations within the Bullring mall, this large store has three elevations on a corner plot.

Working to a design agency brief, we were assigned the task of replacing their previous generation signage with the current style and developing a cladding system that would essentially re-skin the whole three-story shop front. This was particularly challenging, as there were very few ‘hardpoints’ into which to fix the various, heavy cladding and signage components. Our Survey, Design and Manufacturing teams used innovative, as well as proven, methods to achieve the required design.

As this is such a prestigious store, we evolved the signage types used on previous projects to help enhance the Goldsmiths brand yet further and make use of the generous spaces available on the fascia areas.

The whole project was delivered by us on time and with 0% snagging. Since the refurbishment, the store has experienced increased footfall and seen a marked uplift in sales. Great news in what is still a challenging retail environment.

June 2012 | Roadchef, Rownhams Motorway Services, near Southampton

Northampton Signs was successful in tendering for a new signage scheme at Rownham Services on M27.

The main element of the work was a large goal post entrance portal – 7.8m by 4.4m. This required an internal steel structure clad with powder-coated aluminium panels with shadow gaps. This was complicated by the requirement to tilt the front face forward and that one ‘leg’ needed to be longer than the other. Close liaison with a Structural Engineer to ensure the sign was structurally sound whilst not over engineered was important.

The portal was finished off with an illuminated logo, from built up metal letters with white LEDs to illuminate acrylic faces. The end product is a crisp looking, well-made sign and structure.

The client appreciated the detailed timed management for the installation, as the site was open to the public 24 / 7 throughout the process.

December 2013 | The Restaurant Group – Giraffe, Heathrow T5

Apart from signage, sometimes we are asked to help with other ‘challenging’ concepts. The Restaurant Group asked if Northampton Signs could help with a giraffe themed goalpost within their restaurant at T5. The structure is curved, partially transparent, with textured colouring and, of course, secure. It took a bit of design time, but the result is a lovely addition to the unit.

October 2013 | Arcadia, Bluewater

Northampton Signs was again trusted by Arcadia to deliver the signage for the major UK project of 2013 – Bluewater. Arcadia introduced a new ‘statement Topshop and Topman store’ along with refreshes to Wallis, Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins and Burton. At each store new signage and schemes were designed and trialled. Inevitably this project involved a lot of planning and co-ordination and last minute changes, as the new stores were developed.

The brands were delighted with the end results and give a good base for the programmes of work for 2014 and beyond.

And we are proud of the work we have done here. There are lots of beautiful signs, working well with the other new elements, to create a great ‘statement stores’ for Arcadia.
