January 2010 | TOPSHOP TOPMAN Knightsbridge - New Store

Sir Philip Green, owner of Acadia Group, has struck a deal with members of the Abu Dhabi royal family to open a huge TOPSHOP TOPMAN store opposite Harrods in Knightsbridge. Northampton Signs have been selected to provide the full branding and navigational signage scheme.

The new west London store, due to open Easter 2010, will aim to cash in on London’s burgeoning tourist trade, with record numbers of wealthy overseas visitors flocking to the capital to take advantage of the cheap pound.

In September, TOPSHOP TOPMAN opened its biggest premises outside London at the Liverpool One shopping centre, where the signage package was also provided by Northampton Signs. The new 19,000 sq ft Knightsbridge store will be the highest-profile opening for TOPSHOP TOPMAN in the UK to date.

January 2010 | Abbey to Santander Rebrand Programme

Northampton Signs have just completed re-branding 105 Abbey sites in the Midlands East region. The new signage is currently shrouded with an ‘Abbey’ branded temporary cover logos. The Santander branded signage is due to be unveiled on 14th January 2010. As part of our remit, we also re-branded the banks four high-profile UK office sites.

January 2010 | ExtraCare Charitable Trust - New Oscott Retirement Village

The ExtraCare Charitable Trust is the pioneer of Village communities which enable people to enjoy active and independent lifestyles in their later years. We have carried out a number of signage projects for the Trust all over England and Wales.

Northampton Signs have recently designed, manufactured and installed the village centre signs for the £37m project at New Oscott. This new village is ExtraCare's first site in the Birmingham area, providing 260 one and two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent and purchase. The village centre facilities include a restaurant, cafe, bar, gymnasium, IT suite, library, hairdressers, welling-being suite and a shop.

February 2010 | Arcadia Flagship Stores in the North East

We are just completing work on an extensive signage package for two major Arcadia sites in Newcastle. The new Eldon Square shopping centre extension is home to two of the retailer’s latest flagship stores; a 3 story TOPSHOP TOPMAN store and a large Dorothy Perkins, Burton and Miss Selfridge combined Multi-Site. Working alongside London based branding experts Dalziel + Pow, we have developed a new and exciting signage and way finding schemes for both units.

April 2010 | Northampton Signs completes first phase of introduction of Lean Manufacturing

Lean Manufacturing – the proven Toyota methodology to improving efficiency – has been introduced at Northampton Signs. In mid 2009, we took the plunge to push this methodology throughout the business, despite some natural reservations from some in the business. Six key staff members, including Simon Lowin (Group Managing Director) and Paul York (Production and Installation Manager), embarked on an NVQ Level 2 in Business Improvement Techniques. What a success!

The principles are simple and universal. And even staff who haven’t been on the course, are starting to understand some of the ideas and certainly the power of it. Simon Lowin said “Six of our staff have just completed and passed the NVQ Level 2 in Business Improvement Techniques with another group just about to start the training. As a company we feel staff development is completely essential. It not only makes your staff feel valued but it’s also good for your business as the more skills and knowledge your staff gain, the more efficiently they can do their job. In a competitive environment you’ve got to develop all the time, you need to actively improve what you do to keep ahead of your competitors.

We now have a much clearer understanding about lean manufacturing. In fact, we’ve already implemented the techniques in our business in preparation for future changes. It’s a proven methodology for manufacturing businesses but the principles could easily be applied to any industry.

I’d definitely recommend Northampton College Business Centre. The assessors were really enthusiastic and positive; they have a good wealth of knowledge and background experience so they know what they’re talking about. They showed us how we could directly apply the training to our business.”

May 2010 | Project Completed: NHS Berrywood Hospital

Following completion of Phase 1 of this project in December 2008, we have just completed Phase 2. Following a tender process, Northampton Signs was initially selected to consult, design, manufacture and install the way-finding system for this new facility.  Working closely with Balfour Beatty and the NHS, as well as using previous experience on Healthcare projects, our Design and Sales team devised a modular signage system that would meet the stringent requirements for this type of project.

The signage elements were designed to avoid ligature points and be tamper resistant.   They also needed to harmonise the with domestic environment theme that forms major part of the project’s internal look and feel.  Here, coastal, woodland, countryside and riverbank themed visuals ‘softened’ the signage as well as forming part of the visual way-finding system. Large format, digitally printed artwork was applied to walls in core areas to emphasise these themes.  As part of our remit, Northampton Signs also provided the emergency escape route signs, fire action signs and room/area identification discs.

Following design sign-off, and thorough strategic planning, the project was closely managed on site by our Design Manager and Installation Teams to ensure the tight deadlines were successfully met.  Both the client, Balfour Beatty, and the NHS are very happy with our productive involvement, which ensured that both phases of the project ran very smoothly.

August 2010 | TOPSHOP Brompton Road, Knightsbridge, London

Following an invitation from Arcadia Group to undertake the signage elements of this flagship London store, we have recently completed installation of our bespoke signage package. Many of the signs are unique to this store in terms of design and manufacture. They fit in very well with the premium feel that the rest if the interior scheme has. The store is now trading, with excellent sales revenues and to critical acclaim from the press and celebrities alike.


'Positioned directly opposite Harrods, the store stocks the very best edit of Topshop's Boutique, Unique, mainline, footwear and accessories collections. can reveal a slick experience full of the brand's best pieces. A section dedicated to Meadham Kirchoff and Mark Fast's collaborations sits on floor one, as well as Kate Moss's latest range. The latter has been scaled down from six to just two collections per year and personal shoppers have been headhunted from Harvey Nichols and Selfridges to give a bespoke experience.'

September 2010 | St. Andrew's Healthcare, Nottinghamshire

Continuing our strong relationship with St. Andrew's Healthcare, we have just finished installing the new internal and external signage packages at their latest site near Mansfield. Consulting closely with the client's development team, we designed, manufactured and installed a bespoke signage scheme to suit the requirements of this site set up specifically for adult male service users.

November 2010 | Halifax to Santander Agencies Conversion Roll Out

We have just completed a roll out of 45 Santander agency branches, changing their original Halifax branding to Santander, with many incorporating estate agency branding also.

June 2010 | Goldsmiths Metro Centre, Gateshead, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

We have just completed the signage and shop-front cladding elements of Goldsmiths' flagship store in the North East. This complex refurbishment project required a completely new shop front. Our brief was to clad over the new shop-front framework using fabricated aluminium panels complete with integral Goldsmiths branding. Being a high-end jewellers, the finish had to be of the highest quality, so very careful consideration was taken over panel joints and fixing details. All of our panels had to integrate seamlessly with the stainless-steel skirting, also supplied by us, and the shop-front glazing. The project was very complex, but forward planning and detailed surveying, allowed for the majority of the components to be CAD designed for CNC production. Our highly experienced installation crew took care of the rest, ensuring a quality finish which was extremely well received by our client.

October 2010 | Goldsmiths Eldon Square, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Following our success with the Goldsmiths Metro Centre, we have just completed it's sister store in the Eldon Square shopping mall, Newcastle city centre. This project was different in that we were over-cladding existing shop-front structural elements as well as integrating new features. This required a different approach so as not to compromise the new-look Goldsmiths scheme and branding. Again, careful consideration was taken over how all of the many shop-font components interrelated with each other to achieve an excellent end result. Along with the interior works, the refurbishment has transformed a tired looking, out-of-date store into a prestigious looking retail unit.

December 2010 | St. Andrew's Healthcare, William Wake House, Northampton

William Wake House is the latest addition to the St Andrew’s Healthcare group, and provides 132 en-suite bedrooms within eight rehabilitation and recovery wards. The hospital is set to house some of St Andrew’s most specialist services to date - including services for Deaf people, culturally-sensitive support for African-Caribbean men and transitional care for young adults as well as supporting men with mental health needs, learning disabilities, Aspergers and acquired brain injuries.

As part of our continuing relationship with St. Andrew's Healthcare, we were asked to develop a new internal way-finding system. Working alongside Oxford Architects, the buildings designers, we developed a scheme to suit the internal structure of the building, making use of cylindrical columns. These signs are supported by modular floor directories and room designation signs. We also supplied and fitted room ID plates to the 1100+ rooms that make up the building.

December 2010 | Market Walk Fashion Mall, Northampton Town Centre

We have just completed the external signage element of this local shopping mall re-brand. The signage installed to the two entrances include two sets of fabricated stainless-steel ‘Market Walk’ script letters, complete with white LED halo-illumination. We also supplied new entrance canopy cladding for the letters to be mounted to and four double-sided projection banners which are fixed to the building elevations.
