Free People Brighton: Bespoke Shopfront Signage by Northampton Signs

Northampton Signs recently completed a full retail signage package for Free People Brighton, delivering a refined and carefully manufactured shopfront for the brand’s East Street location. The project combined illuminated fascia lettering, a projecting sign, acrylic window branding and temporary storefront graphics to create a premium retail presence in one of Brighton’s busy shopping areas.

For brands looking to achieve a high-quality . The final result brought together warm halo illumination, bronze and brass finishes, soft neutral tones and detailed window graphics to create a clean, elegant and recognisable shopfront.

A Complete Retail Signage Package for Free People Brighton

The main fascia sign was produced using built-up bronze lettering with deep returns. The lettering was set off the fascia, giving the sign physical depth and allowing the warm white LED lighting to create a soft halo effect behind each letter. This gave the Free People brand name a subtle but highly effective illuminated finish, making the shopfront visible while keeping the look refined and understated.

The fascia lettering was designed to sit across the main elevation of the store, with careful attention given to the scale, spacing and positioning of the letters. The sign measured 3640 mm wide, with the letters centred across the fascia to create a balanced and premium appearance.

This type of built-up illuminated lettering gives a much more architectural finish than flat signage. It allows the brand name to become part of the shopfront structure, while the warm white halo illumination adds visibility during darker hours without overpowering the neutral colour palette of the frontage.

Warm White Halo Illuminated Lettering for Free People Brighton

A key feature of this project was the halo-illuminated fascia lettering. Warm white LEDs were mounted within the bronze letters, with opal backs used to help diffuse the light. The letters were fixed using stainless steel screws, with power cables passing through the fascia and linking letter to letter before connecting to a transformer inside the building in an accessible location for maintenance.

The installation required careful planning because the cables needed to be positioned before the ceiling areas were finished. This meant the power locations, cable routes and fixing points had to be accurately coordinated in advance. The finished result was a clean and precise illuminated sign with no visible wiring from the front.

The warm halo effect suited the Free People brand particularly well. Rather than using bright face illumination, the lighting created a softer glow around the lettering, giving the shopfront a more premium and subtle finish.

Projecting Sign for Street Visibility for Free People Brighton

Alongside the main fascia, Northampton Signs produced a projecting sign to improve visibility along East Street. The projecting sign was made using a thick, folded aluminium panel over a tube, with the panel powder-coated in Beige. The sign also featured thick aluminium lettering finished in brass, standing off the panel.

The projecting sign included brass-finished support rods, a support rod, vertical and horizontal rods, and a brass-finished fixing plate with rounded corners. These details gave the sign a crafted, premium look while ensuring it was structurally suitable for an external retail environment.

Projecting signs are especially useful in high street retail locations because they allow the brand to be seen from both directions of pedestrian traffic. For Free People Brighton, this helped create a stronger street presence while maintaining the soft and elegant brand style.

Acrylic and Vinyl Window Branding for Free People Brighton

The project also included a smaller window branding element. Northampton Signs produced dense white acrylic lettering to match the white colour, with double-sided glass tape applied to the rear. This acrylic was applied externally to the glazing. White self-adhesive vinyl lettering was reverse-applied to the glass to align with the acrylic lettering, creating a layered and accurate finish.

This combination of acrylic and vinyl added depth to the window branding while keeping the appearance clean and minimal. The detail was especially important because Free People’s branding uses simple letterforms and generous spacing, meaning accuracy in alignment and spacing was essential.

Temporary Window and Barricade Graphics for Free People Brighton

In addition to the permanent signage, Northampton Signs produced temporary window and barricade graphics for the store. These graphics featured the Free People brand name in pink, combined with soft floral artwork across the glazing. The digitally printed graphics were used across multiple window sections, helping to cover the storefront during the preparation and pre-opening period.

The barricade and window graphics turned the shopfront into a branded display while the store was being completed. This is an effective solution for retail openings because it keeps the unit looking attractive, protects the internal works from public view and builds awareness before the store opens.

The window graphics were produced to suit multiple glazing panels, with individual artwork files prepared for each window section. This ensured that the floral design and Free People branding could be installed consistently across the different window shapes and sizes.

Careful Planning, Fixing and Installation Detail for Free People Brighton

Retail signage projects require more than just good visual design. They need accurate surveys, clear fixing details and coordination with the building structure. For the Free People Brighton project, Northampton Signs prepared detailed fixing and cable positions for the main illuminated letters, accounting for the angled fascia and the stand-off distance required for the halo effect.

The drawings included power locations, fixing locations, letter stand-off details and fascia measurements. The letters were positioned around an angle, with the top of the letter set off from the fascia and the bottom of the letter sitting further forward due to the angle. This level of detail helped ensure the finished sign looked clean, aligned and professionally installed.
